What a BACnet Device ID actually means
A BACnet Device ID, or Device instance, is the logical identifier of a device in a BACnet environment. It is not the IP address, MAC address or MS/TP address. Its main purpose is to identify the device uniquely when it responds to Who-Is/I-Am or when another application accesses the Device object.
A duplicate Device ID can be especially troublesome because two physically different devices may appear as the same BACnet Device object. The result can be unstable discovery, incorrect HMI binding, mixed-up trends or routing problems. Checking IDs is therefore useful during commissioning and before integrating multiple networks.
When to use the checker
- Before importing many devices: check whether any IDs are duplicated in the list.
- When Who-Is/I-Am behaves oddly: rule out obvious range errors or the reserved wildcard value.
- When replacing a controller: check whether the new Device ID collides with an existing device.
The tool does not scan the network and cannot know whether the same ID is used by a device that is currently offline. Treat the result as a quick check of the supplied list, not as a complete BACnet audit.
